The following Itineraries are sample tour options to get you Off the Beaten Track:

Off the Beaten Track Summer Tour with Imilchil

This tour runs Marrakech to Fes or Fes to Marrakech in summer months only because, in winter, the High Atlas mountains usually cut off by snow and spring comes late to these mountains.  If your dates work out there is the opportunity to attend the Marriage Festival in Imilchil.  

Day 1 – Marrakech to Bin el Ouidane.  Transfer to Ouzoud, visit one of the highest waterfalls in Morocco, continue to Bin el Ouidane.  Overnight in Berber Guesthouse.

Day 2 – Bin el Ouidane to Imilchil.  Transfer across the mountains to the Berber village of Imilchil where an end of summer engagement for marriage festival is held (moussem).  Moussems, part of the Berber culture, are held at the end of each harvest i.e. rose, dates, wheat, almond etc. as a way to meet up and thank God for the harvest.  Overnight in Berber Guesthouse

Day 3 – Imilchil in the High Atlas.  Day to relax and explore with you driver i.e. visit the two lakes of Isli and Tislit.  The lakes are said to have been formed from the tears of two lovers who died from broken hears as they were unable to marry due to tribal rivalry.  Overnight in Berber Guesthouse

Day 4 – Marriage Festival (Moussem) in Imilchil  (dates permitting).  If your dates work, and we may not know in advance, join in the festivities of the Moussem to remember the story of the heart-broken lovers and find a new Berber husband or wife.  Otherwise, a day to relax or a day’s hike.  Overnight in Berber Guesthouse

Day 5 – Imilchil to Tamtattouchte.  Transfer to the village of Tamtattouchte, detouring along the route to visit and drink tea with a Berber nomad family in their tent or cave.  Overnight in Berber family hotel where traditional Berber music is played after dinner.  Overnight in Berber Guesthouse

Day 6 – Tamtattouchte to Erg Chebbi Dunes.  Transfer along the Todra Gorge to the dunes of the Erg Chebbi sand sea.  Camel trek with a desert guide to overnight in the desert camp of your choice i.e. deep camp or glamping in a luxury camp.  Overnight in Desert Camp

Day 7 – Sunrise in the Dunes and Desert Exploration.  Sunrise and return camel trek.  Day to relax and explore with your driver i.e. listen to Gnawa musicians, visit a nomad family on the far side of the dunes and visit the souk (market) in Rissani.  Overnight in hotel at the dune line.

Day 8 – Erg Chebbi to Fes via Azrou and the Cedar Forests.  Transfer to Fes via Ziz valley gorge, cedar forests where Macaque monkeys live and Azou.  It is an interesting route with a stop for lunch usually around Midelt.

Off the Beaten Track Tour with J’bel Sarhro and Erg Chegaga

This tour runs Marrakech to Marrakech but can be amended to include the Erg Chebbi Dunes and end in Fes.  Or to start in Fes and end in Marrakech.  

Day 1 – Marrakech to Skoura Palm Grove.  Transfer across the High Atlas to Skoura Palm Grove.  Overnight in small hotel/guesthouse

Day 2 – Skoura to Dades Gorge via Rose Valley Circuit (off-road).  Transfer to Kelaa Mgouna (Rose Valley) and leave the main highway to take the Old Rose Valley Circuit (off-road) via Boutaghrah and perhaps see nomads on the move – their camels heavily laden with the weight of black wool tents, cooking pots and small children.  Re-join the tarmac in the Dades valley and continue past the rock formations of the Tamnalt hills.  Overnight in small hotel/guesthouse

Day 3 – Dades Gorge to Tamtattouchte across the Atlas Mountains.  Transfer to Msemir and cross the piste (off-road) towards Todra Gorge. Witness a nomadic way of life as you pass through the rugged beauty of these mountains and stop to drink mint tea with a nomad family in their thick wool tent.  Overnight in small hotel/guesthouse

Day 4 – Tamtattouchte to Ncob via Todra Gorge and the Tizi-n-Tazazert.  Transfer along Todra Gorge to Tinghir and cross (off-road) one of the most fabulous mountain passes in the Jbel Sarhro – the Tizi-n-Tazazert, with far-reaching views, stunning rock formations, Berber settlements and fertile valleys.  Overnight in small hotel/guesthouse

Day 5 – Ncob to Erg Chigaga via Draa River Valley and Mhamid.  Transfer along Draa River Valley through lush palmeries and Berber villages to Mhamid and cross (off-road) the desert wilderness of Erg Chigaga that is home to semi-nomadic Ait Atta Berber nomads. Reaching the desert camp is always a wonderful experience as is walking in the sand dunes at sunset.  Overnight in desert camp

Day 6 –  Desert Exploration and Camel Trekking in Erg Chigaga.  Spend a day relaxing to the pace of desert life. Walk in the immediate dunes or explore with your driver e.g. look for a family of nomads to visit and wonder how they survive here.  Late afternoon meet your guide and camel trek in Erg Chigaga at sunset.  Overnight in desert camp

Day 7 – Erg Chigaga to Ait Benhaddou via Iriqui Salt Lake and Foum Zguid.  Wake early to watch the sunrise and, after breakfast, cross the Iriqui salt flats on your journey to the desert oasis of Foum Zguid. After lunch pick up the paved road and continue to Ait Benhaddou.  Overnight in small hotel/guesthouse

Day 8 – Ait Benhaddou  to Marrakech.  Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou and transfer to Marrakech passing along Ounila Valley, through the Berber village of Telouet and back across the Tizi-n-Tichka pass.

Off the Beaten Track Marrakech to Fes / Fes to Marrakech

This tour runs Marrakech to Fes or in reverse from Fes to Marrakech.  

Day 1 – Marrakech to Skoura Palm Grove.  Transfer across the High Atlas to Skoura Palm Grove passing through the Berber village of Telouet and along Ounila Valley to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou.  Overnight in small hotel/guesthouse

Day 6 –  Desert Exploration and Camel Trekking in Erg Chebbi.  Spend a day relaxing to the pace of desert life. Walk in the immediate dunes or explore with your driver e.g. visit the market (souk) in Rissani, look for a nomad family on the far side of the dunes or listen to Gnawa musicians.  Sunset camel trek, with a desert guide, through the Erg Chebbi dunes to sleep under the stars in a desert camp.  Overnight in desert camp

Day 7 – Erg Chebbi to Fes via Azrou and the Cedar Forests.  Transfer to Fes via Ziz valley gorge, cedar forests where Macaque monkeys live and Azou.  It is an interesting route with a stop for lunch usually around Midelt.
