The following Itineraries are sample tour options from Fes:

Fes City Guide Tour (walking)

City Guide Tours include the following key sites, time permitting, based on a half or full day tour:

  • Medressah (Quoranic School) Attarin or Bou-Inania.  A school of Koranic study with carved cedar wood and alabaster, mosaics and marble
  • Quaraouiyine Mosque, founded by Fatima Bint al-Fihria in C9th, whose minaret is one of the oldest in the world.  Non-Muslims are not permitted to enter but you are allowed to look in through the door

Fes Day Trips

Fes Day Trip to Volubilis and Meknes.  Transfer to Meknes for a City Guide Tour.  After the tour head north to visit the Roman ruins of Volubilis with the option of lunching in the hill-top town of Moulay Idriss.  Return to Fes in a circular route to include views over Fes from the Merenid Tombs.

Fes Day Trip to Chefchaouen.  Transfer to Chefchaouen (3-4hrs drive each way) with an early start to give you as much time as possible to walk around this relaxed and friendly small ‘Blue Town’ painted in hues of blue.  Lunch in one of the cafes on the Central Square and return to Fes mid-afternoon.  Recommended: consider a 2day trip to Chefchaouen to include Meknes and Volubilis

Fes Day Trip to Azrou and hike in the cedar forests.  Transfer to Azrou, early on a Tuesday if you would like to visit the market, with a hike in the cedar forests in the company of a Mountain Guide.

Fes Short Tours (2 days)

Fes 2 day tour with Chefchaouen, Meknes and Volubilis.  Transfer to Chefchaouen with a free afternoon to explore this relaxed and friendly ‘blue town’ and over-night in a riad in the medina where you can dine in one of the cafes at the edge of the central square.  Return to Fes the following day via the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the hill-top town of Moulay Idriss and the Imperial City of Meknes.

Fes 2 day tour with Meknes, Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Hike in Mount Zerhoune.  Transfer to the hill-top town of Moulay Idriss with a tour of the town to include tea with a Berber family and perhaps a hike in the area and forests of Mount Zerhoune.  Walk through olive groves to visit the Roman Ruins at Volubilis and, after lunch, return to Fes via Meknes.

Fes Desert Tour (2days)

Day 1 – Fes to the Erg Chebbi Dunes.  8am pick-up and transfer south across the Middle Atlas to the Erg Chebbi dunes.  Along the route pass through Ifrane, Azrou, cedar forests of the Middle Atlas where Barbary Macaques live, Midelt, Ziz valley gorge, Erfoud and Rissani.  Arrive at the edge of the sand sea in time for a sunset camel trek in Erg Chebbi to a desert camp.  Overnight in the Desert Camp of choice

Day 2 – Erg Chebbi to Fez via Ziz Valley and Cedar Forests.  Wake early to watch the sunrise and, if you overnight in the deep camp, camel trek back to the dune line.  After breakfast depart, back along the same route, to Fes and drop off at your accommodation.

Fes Desert Tour (3 days)

Options for adding in an extra day or days to slow down the pace, spend more time in one location or extend the range include:  

  • return to Fes via the Todra Gorge
  • 2 night camel trek with a desert guide
  • full day in the desert to relax and explore with your driver (see below)

  • Visit the souk in Rissani (Sun, Tues, Thurs) and eat Medfouna
  • Drive to the far side of the dunes to visit a Berber family (ex-nomad) living on the desert floor
  • Hire an ATV/dune buggy/quad bike and ride in the desert with a guide
  • Return to the dunes and walk in the dunes at sunset.

Day 3 – Erg Chebbi to Fez via Ziz Valley and Cedar Forests.  Wake early to watch the sunrise and, after breakfast, return back along the same route, to Fes and drop off at your accommodation.

Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour (3 days)

A desert tour from Fes to Marrakech is possible in 3 days however you may want to consider an extra day to slow down the pace – see 4day option below.

Day 3 – Skoura Palm Grove to Marrakech.  Pass through administration town of Ouarzazate and head north to visit the World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou, one of Morocco’s most spectacular fortified villages (ksour) – walk through the village to the top for 360degree views.  Continue along Ounila Valley, and over Tizi-n-Telouet, to visit Kasbah of el Glaoui in the Berber village of Telouet.  From Telouet cross the highest Atlas road pass of Tizi-n-Tichka, with far-reaching views, to reach Marrakech late afternoon/early evening.

Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour (4 days)

Extra day options to slow down the pace of a 3day Fes to Marrakech:

  • a day to relax i.e. Skoura Palm Grove
  • a day’s hike i.e. High Atlas, Skoura, Rose Valley or one of the gorges
  • a day to Get Off the Beaten Track and beyond the usual tourist routes
  • a day to explore with your driver i.e. Erg Chebbi dunes (see below)

For all itineraries it is possible to add in the High Atlas, a day’s hike, time to relax in the coastal town of Essaouira, a Moroccan Cookery Lesson or Spa Hammam for a steam, scrub and massage, the blue town of Chefchaouen.

Day 1 – Arrive Fes.  Arrive Fes and transfer to a riad in the medina (old walled city).  Overnight in Fes medina

Day 7 – Marrakech Day Trip to High Atlas.  Leave the bustle of the Red City behind and head into the High Atlas mountains for the day.  Drive along Ourika Valley and across the mountains to the Berber village of Imlil to lunch in Kasbah du Toubkal; return along Ouirgane Valley at the end of the day.  Overnight in Marrakech medina
