A benefit tour of Morocco, with a sunset camel trek in Erg Chegaga, with all profits to the Children of the Sahara Foundation – a desert tour adventure that takes us across the High Atlas from Marrakech to the sands of the Sahara.
The Children of the Sahara Foundation is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit charity that helps improve the lives of the nomadic children of the Sahara while sustaining their cultural heritage. The Foundation is a non-religious and non-partisan organization whose founders utilize their professional and personal relationships and subject-matter expertise to benefit the Sahara children.
Arrive in Marrakech before the trip and spend one night in this vibrant city before heading South on our Sahara adventure that takes us across the High Atlas Mountains and along the Draa River Valley to where the paved road ends at M’hamid. From M’hamid our desert adventure begins and we experience something of the reality of life in a protected desert wilderness that is home to the Ait Atta Berbers. Return to Marrakech for a couple of days, and soak up the atmosphere, before heading home.

Marrakech Desert Tour Dates

Marrakech Desert Tour Itinerary
Day 1 - Marrakech to Zagora via the Atlas and Draa River Valley
8am transfer from Marrakech across the Tizi-n-Tichka High Atlas pass to Ouarzazate. Continue, from Ouarzazate, past the lush palmeries and crumbling Kasbahs of the Draa Valley that, until modern times, formed part of the lucrative trans-Saharan trade route. In those days, caravans of thousands of camels would make the hazardous journey to the souks of Marrakech; a journey that will take us less than one day in a 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser, with a stop for lunch at Adgz en route. Overnight hotel with evening meal and breakfast included.
Day 2 - Zagora to Erg Chegaga
After breakfast transfer to Mhamid and then across a desert wilderness, via the Sacred Heart Oasis, to the sand dunes of Erg Chegaga. Camp fire and dinner served under the stars. Overnight desert camp with evening meal and breakfast included.
Day 3 - Erg Chegaga Desert Camp and Sunset Camel trek
A day to relax to the pace of desert life and walk in the dunes. Camels and desert guides will be at the camp for local camel rides into the dunes. Overnight desert camp with evening meal and breakfast included.
Day 4 - Erg Chegaga to M’hamid
A day to explore with our drivers and return across the hammada (black desert) to M’hamid. Hotel with pool and hammocks with evening meal and breakfast included.
Day 5 – M’hamid to Ouarzazate via Draa River Valley
Transfer along the Draa River Valley to Ouarzazate. Overnight hotel with evening meal and breakfast included.
Day 6 - Ouarzazate to Marrakech via Ait Benhaddou & Telouet
After breakfast transfer to Marrakech via Ait Benhaddou and the Berber village of Telouet. Visit the World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou, one of Morocco’s most spectacular ksours (fortified villages) that once stood on the route of the trans-Saharan caravans through the Atlas mountains to the fondouks of Marrakech. We will also visit the Berber village of Telouet and the Kasbah of el Glaoui, former War Lord and Pasha of Marrakech. Lunch in Telouet and continue to Marrakech. End of Tour
Price and What is Included
The price of the tour is 6900DH per person with all profits donated to the Children of the Sahara Foundation.
Price to include:
- Hotels on a twin-share basis – 2 per room
- hotels on HB (HB = half board with dinner and breakfast included)
- Camel trek in the Erg Chigaga sand dunes
Price to exclude:
- Flights
- Airport transfers to hotel or riad in Marrakech
- Accommodation in Marrakech before and after the tour – we can advise and book hotels/riads
- Single supplements - available in hotels and desert camp
- Lunches – payable locally
- Beverages e.g. mineral water, sodas, alcohol
Confirmation & Payment Options
Tours are confirmed on receipt of a 25% deposit and the balance is due four weeks before the start date of the trip. Payment can be via bank transfer or we accept all major credit cards except AMEX. Credit card payments incur a 1.5% surcharge that is not included in the cost of our Moroccan holidays to give you the choice of payment.
Bank transfers may incur charges and debit card payments are free.
