Marrakech to Fes Desert Trail - Recommendations
We recommend a minimum or 4 days and 3 nights for a Marrakech to Fes, or Fes to Marrakech, desert trail tour. Over 4 days you can travel at your leisure and have time to discover the sites of interest along the route.
If you have more time we can add in additional days as rest days, a full day to explore the desert region of the Erg Chebbi dunes, or we can vary the route.
Marrakesh to Fes Desert Trail - Sample 4-day Tour
Day 1: Marrakesh to Ait Benhaddou via Telouet
8am meet your driver in Reception to transfer South from Marrakesh across the Tizi-n-Tichka Atlas pass, with far-reaching views across the mountains, to the traditional High Atlas Berber village of Telouet and take a guided tour of the abandoned Kasbah of el Glaoui, former Pasha of Marrakech. Continue to Ait Benhaddou to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kasbah Ait Benhaddou.
Day 2: Ait Benhaddou to Dades Gorge via Skoura and Rose Valley
Visit the Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate and continue to Skoura Palmerie for a guided tour of the the partially renovated Kasbah d’Imridil. Pass through Rose Valley (Kelaa Mgouna) and, in spring time, buy a fragrant garland of roses from one of the Berber children that line the route. Leave the main route at Boumalne Dades and drive along the Dades Gorge past ruined hilltop Kasbahs, valley-floor gardens and the strange rock formations of the Tamnalt Hills.
Day 3: Dades to the Erg Chebbi dunes via Todra Gorge
Drive to Tineghir and, once again, leave the main route to drive along the river valley of the Todra Gorge, the highest gorge in Morocco that is just 20m wide at the mouth and over 200m high. See the gorge and continue to the Erg Chebbi sand dunes at Merzouga. Arrive at the edge of the dunes with the option to overnight in a hotel or go camel trekking in Erg Chebbi, with a desert guide, and sleep in a nomad tent at a desert camp. Your guide will prepare and serve a tagine under the stars of a Sahara night sky.
Day 4: Erg Chebbi to Fez via Ziz Valley and Cedar Forests
If you choose an Erg Chebbi camel trek - wake early to see the rising sun and ride your camel back to Merzouga. After breakfast depart for Fes via the Ziz Valley Gorge and the cedar forests that are home to Barbary apes – this is an interesting route and you can stop for lunch in a Berber café. This tour can run in reverse from the medieval world of Fes, with a camel trek in the Erg Chebbi dunes, to the imperial city of Marrakech. We recommend 4 days for this tour to travel at your leisure and restrict the time spent in a vehicle each day.

Private Morocco Tours – Confirmation & Payment
Tours are confirmed on receipt of a 25% deposit and the balance is due four weeks before the start date of the trip. Payment can be via bank transfer or we accept all major credit cards except AMEX. Credit card payments incur a 1.5% surcharge that is not automatically included in the cost of our Moroccan holidays to give you the choice of payment.
