Fes (Fez) City Walking Tour with English Speaking Guide
Step back centuries into the world of Fes (Fez). In addition to the European part, built after the First World War, there is Fes el Jédid c.14AD and Fes el Bali c.9AD. The Old Medina of Fes el Bali is a World Heritage Site and one of the largest medieval cities of its type - its narrow cobbled streets are filled with ancient mosques and towering green-glazed minarets. Losing yourself here is akin to losing yourself in time, until you emerge into the clatter of a busy souk where proud artisans craft objects as their forefathers did before them. Highlights of a day walking tour include:
- Mosques including the Quaraouiyine Mosque founded in 859 by Fatima el Fihri and the Andalusian Mosque dating back to 860. Entry is not permitted to non-Muslims
- Fountains including the Nejjarine fountain
- Medersas (Koranic schools) founded as early as the 13th century
- Batha Palace now a museum of arts and traditions
- Chouwara Tanneries
- Souks including Souk Attarine, one of the liveliest in the city
- Bab Boujloud with its green and blue ceramics
- Mellah and the 17th century Ibn Danan synagogue
Fes (Fez) Day Trips
The most popular day trip from Fes is to the roman ruins at Volubilis and Meknes with local guided tours. Other options are Fes day tours to Chefchaouen (3hrs) or Azrou with a walk in the cedar forests.
Fes to Fes Budget Desert Trips – 2 days, 3 days
Fes to Fes desert tours, if you are on a budget, are run in a local Mercedes taxi to Merzouga and the dunes of the Erg Chebbi sand sea. The drive is around 7hrs’ drive each way so you may prefer to consider a 3day trip with a day to relax to the pace of desert life – either in a hotel at the dune line or on a longer camel trek in the Erg Chebbi dunes. Your taxi driver will pick you up from your hotel, riad or even the airport and transfer you across the Middle Atlas to Merzouga via Azrou, cedar forests and the Ziz valley gorge. Merzouga lies at the base of the Erg Chebbi dunes and, from here, you camel trek with a desert guide to sleep under the stars in our nomad-tented camp. Wake early to watch the sunrise and return trek to shower, breakfast and depart to Fes.
Fes to Marrakech Desert Excursions – 3 days, 4 days or 5 days
You need at least 3 full days for a Fes to Marrakech desert tour to include an Erg Chebbi camel trek to sleep overnight in our deep desert camp in the dunes. Or, if you prefer, sleep in a hotel at the dune line with a sunset camel trek or no camels at all. Suggested itinerary for a 4 day Fes to Marrakech desert tour:
- Day 1 – Fes to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. Meet your driver at your riad and transfer across the Middle Atlas to Merzouga via Azrou, the cedar forests and the Ziz valley gorge. It is an interesting route with a stop for lunch around Midelt. Arrive at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes and check into a hotel at the dune from where you can safely wander in the immediate desert to watch the sunset.
- Day 2 – Desert exploration and Eerg Chebbi camel trek. Explore the desert region with your driver e.g. fossil beds, seasonal lakes, Gnawa musicians, Merzouga and perhaps Rissani on souk day. In the late afternoon camel trek across the dunes to sleep under the stars in our deep desert nomad-tented camp or, if camel trekking is not for you, enjoy a sunset camel ride with another night in your hotel at the dune line.
- Day 3 – Merzouga to Ouarzazate via Todra Gorge and Rose Valley. Transfer to Ouarzazate via Todra Gorge, Kelaa Mgouna (valley of the roses), the valley of one thousand kasbahs and Skoura palmerie.
- Day 4 – Ouarzazate to Marrakech via Ait Benhaddou and Telouet. Visit Ait Benhaddou, a World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s most spectacular ksours (fortified villages) that lay along the route of the lucrative camel caravans as they made their way across the mountains. Continue to Marrakech via the High Atlas village of Telouet and visit the Kasbah of el Glaoui. Lunch in Telouet and cross the Tizi-n-Tichka Atlas mountain pass with hair-pin bends and far-reaching views.
If camel trekking and desert dunes are not your idea of a holiday, design your own itinerary with the highlights of your choice e.g. archaeological sites and Imperial Cities.
