About Us
Background
As a Specialist Morocco Travel Consultant, I (Liz Williams) have travelled in Morocco for over 20 years and, to this day, I continue to be amazed by what there is still to discover about the deeply traditional Moroccan Berber culture. Since my first independent tour in 1986, when I hired a car and travelled around with a guide book and map, I remain moved by the hospitality shown to me and, since that first visit, my fascination with the culture and traditions of Morocco's nomadic people has remained with me.
My personal favourite highlights of Morocco have to include the dramatic and contrasting landscapes from the High Atlas to the Sahara, camel trekking in the Sahara dunes of the Erg Chigaga sand sea and sleeping in a nomad tent under the stars, wandering through Berber village souks and visiting the nomadic people in the High Atlas or the Sahara. I have been privileged to spend time with a family of Ait Atta Berbers, in Erg Chigaga, to experience their traditional culture and lifestyle.
I work with a great team of Moroccans but there are two tours that I always highlight in my calendar and join. The Photography Tour because it's great opportunity to be with other photograhers and a good tutor - the photo above was taken on the Photo Tour in May 2009 on our camel trek back out of the Erg Chebbi dunes after a sunrise shot. The other is the New Year Tour because celebrating around a camp fire in the desert is a great way to start the year.
I have no hesitation in recommending Morocco as a holiday destination suitable for everyone, including families, and look forward to sharing, with you, some of the highlights of a country that I have come to love and a people whose traditions I have grown to respect.
In support of my personal commitment, and that of Authentic Morocco, to promoting low impact tourism I am a founder member of the Children of the Sahara Foundation - a 501(c)3 not-for-profit charity that helps improve the lives of the nomadic children of the Sahara while supporting the culture and heritage of the Berbers who refer to themselves as Amazigh, which means ’free men’.
